Flickr goes HD

Starting today, Flickr supports 720p HD video!  It’s limited to Flickr Pro members — but free users also got an upgrade and can now upload 2 standard def videos per month.  Previously, free users could upload 0 videos per month.

[Edit: digging a little deeper, anyone can actually upload HD but only video from Pro members shows up in HD on the site.  Flickr keeps the HD versions and if a free user upgrades to a Pro account, their HD versions automagically become available.]

The embedded player is pretty slick.  This must be a sign that it’s time for me upgrade to the Canon 5D Mark II.

Also announced today, a new way to explore videos… Flickr Clock.  This new view sorts videos by the time of day that they were shot.  The new interface was created by Stamen, the same guys who famously designed the Digg visualizations and updated the design of Trulia’s real estate map.

Start the presses

JPG MagazineIt looks like the well respected, under funded, user generated JPG magazine will soon be back in production.

The magazine’s assets have been acquired by a group of investors who will also continue to employee some of the magazine’s staff, we’ve confirmed with a source with knowledge of the deal.

Canon 5D Mark II vs. Nikon D700

Gizmodo did a good side by side review of these two new cameras.  If course, the Canon is a no-brainer for me because of my existing investment in their lenses.  The bottom line:

In the end, for me, I give the trophy to the 5D Mark II for the 1080p video. It’s got its drawbacks, sure, but being able to switch seamlessly from stills to beautiful movies with my awesome 35mm DSLR lens is just too good to be true. The D700 has an edge, albeit a slight one, in some categories like high ISO, but in the new world order, 1080p video from your DSLR is an ace that can’t be beat.

#1 photo site?

Flickr?  Photobucket?  Think again.  It’s Facebook.  And they’re making huge gains with more than 10 billion photos uploaded to the site so far.

US Traffic

Facebook photo traffic has really exploded since their redesign added a photo tab to the main page.  Meanwhile, Flickr is about to pass Photobucket in monthly users.  Funny, I don’t think know a single person that actually uses Photobucket.
